Kano State House member, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has broken his silence following his sudden expulsion from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), describing the action as a “surprise and a rude shock.”
Spear News reports that Jubril was earlier today expelled by the Kano State chapter of the party after his recent visit to President Tinubu and subsequent interview with Channels Television where he expressed support for the Tinubu’s administration.
However, the lawmaker, representing Kiru/Bebeji in Kano State, firmly defended the interview that precipitated his expulsion from the NNPP, stating, “I strongly believe the contents of the interview I granted few days ago in English and Hausa should not warrant such heavy penalty.”
Jibrin asserted that his comments were “in tandem with the core principles of our party and movement which allows for dissenting views overtly or covertly.” Instead of an expulsion, he said, “I expected the party to pick lessons from the interview.” Leaving no room for ambiguity, he emphatically declared, “For the purpose of emphasis, I stand by all the statements I made in the interviews.”
A central pillar of his response was a vehement criticism of the party’s failure to follow its own advocated principles. He revealed that “no invitation was extended to me to defend or explain myself by any organ of the party,” a process he labelled a neglect of “the very important principle of fair hearing, due process and justice that the NNPP cry out loud and demand from others.”
He drew a stark comparison, noting that “even under military dictatorship, an accused is subjected to a court martial.” Jibrin suggested that had due process been followed, “the need for such harsh decision to force me out of a party and family I love so dearly may not be necessary.”
Despite his objections to the process, the lawmaker stated he is “obliged to accept the decision of the party in good faith and without grudges.” He hinted at a potential legal avenue, noting that but for his respect for the party, “I would have viewed this action as null and void as it failed to follow due process… and test it in court.” Instead, he chose to “wish the party well and go in peace,” while also appealing to the NNPP to “allow me also go in peace.”
In a move to settle all outstanding matters, Jibrin addressed the issue of unpaid dues, appealing that “there is no need to go to court as I have never refused to pay my dues.” He respectfully requested the party to “send me the invoice and I will promptly pay.”
The statement concluded with a reflection on his political value and a hint at his next steps. Taking a parting shot, he stated, “The party does not believe any body has political value,” but expressed gratitude to God for “what ever value I have, no matter how little.”
He announced his intention to “carefully weigh all the options before me as I decide on my next political home,” and invited his supporters to join him on his new journey while holding no grudges against those who choose to remain with the NNPP.
