….Declares more 3.4 billion daily users, surging ad revenue
Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced Wednesday that the development of superintelligence – AI systems surpassing human cognitive abilities is now clearly visible on the horizon.
“Over the last few months we have begun to see glimpses of our AI systems improving themselves,” Zuckerberg revealed during Meta’s quarterly earnings call.
“The improvement is slow for now, but undeniable. Developing superintelligence – which we define as AI that surpasses human intelligence in every way – we think is now in sight”
Mark Zuckerberg struck an optimistic tone as Meta reported strong quarterly earnings, revealing that more than 3.4 billion people now use at least one of the company’s apps daily.
The results highlight Meta’s continued dominance in social media and its accelerating investments in artificial intelligence.
“We had another strong quarter with more than 3.4 billion people using at least one of our apps each day – and strong engagement across the board,” Zuckerberg said, noting that robust business performance enables massive AI investments. The company’s advertising business, supercharged by AI, saw 5% more conversions on Instagram and 3% on Facebook this quarter thanks to improved recommendation algorithms.
Meta is reorganizing its AI efforts under a new umbrella called Meta Superintelligence Labs, combining its foundational AI research, product teams, and a specialized group focused on next-generation models.
“Meta’s vision is to bring personal superintelligence to everyone – so that people can direct it towards what they value in their own lives,” Zuckerberg explained.
The initiative is led by AI heavyweight Alexandr Wang, with Nat Friedman heading AI products and Shengjia Zhao serving as Chief Scientist. “They’re all incredibly talented leaders and I’m excited to work closely with them and the world-class group of AI researchers, and infrastructure and data engineers we’re assembling,” Zuckerberg added.
The company is making significant progress on its Llama models, with versions 4.1 and 4.2 in development while simultaneously working on more advanced systems expected within a year.
This rapid advancement is supported by unprecedented computing power. “The people who are joining us will have access to unparalleled compute as we build out several multi-GW clusters,” Zuckerberg said, highlighting the upcoming Prometheus cluster that will be “the world’s first 1GW+ cluster” when it comes online next year. An even more powerful system called Hyperion will eventually scale to 5GW.
Zuckerberg outlined five key areas where AI is driving Meta’s business forward: advertising, engaging experiences, business messaging, Meta AI, and AI devices. The advertising improvements are already delivering results, with “a meaningful percent of our ad revenue now coming from campaigns using one of our GenAI features.” These tools are proving particularly valuable for smaller advertisers while agencies help larger brands implement them strategically.
In content recommendations, AI advancements have increased time spent on Facebook by 5% and Instagram by 6% this quarter alone. “AI is significantly improving our ability to show people content that they’re going to find interesting and useful,” Zuckerberg noted.
The company is also seeing early success with AI-powered video editing tools in Meta AI and its new Edits app, suggesting significant potential for AI-enhanced content creation.
Business messaging represents another major opportunity. “I’ve talked before about how I believe every business will soon have a business AI just like they have an email address, social media account, and website,” Zuckerberg said.
Early tests in several countries show promising product-market fit, with these AI agents being integrated into Facebook and Instagram ads as well as e-commerce websites.
Meta AI, the company’s personal assistant, has already surpassed one billion monthly active users. “Our focus is deepening the experience and making Meta AI the leading personal AI,” Zuckerberg stated, predicting that upcoming model improvements will further boost engagement.
On the hardware front, Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses are seeing accelerating sales, with new performance-focused Oakley Meta HSTN models launching soon featuring longer battery life and higher resolution cameras.
“I think that AI glasses are going to be the main way that we integrate superintelligence into our day-to-day lives,” Zuckerberg said, noting growing usage of Meta AI through the devices. The Quest ecosystem continues expanding too, with the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition driving record interest in cloud gaming while VR finds broader applications in media consumption and web browsing.
While excited about AI’s economic and scientific potential, Zuckerberg emphasized its human impact: “But I think if history is a guide, then an even more important role will be how superintelligence empowers people to be more creative, develop culture and communities, connect with each other, and lead more fulfilling lives.” This philosophy underpins Meta’s approach to developing what Zuckerberg calls “personal superintelligence” – AI systems that individuals can direct toward their own goals and values.
The company plans to share more about its AI and Reality Labs work at its Connect event on September 17. “Overall, it has been a busy quarter,” Zuckerberg concluded. “Strong business performance and real momentum in assembling both the talent and the compute that we need to build personal superintelligence for everyone. I’m very grateful for our teams who are working hard to deliver this, and thanks to all of you for being on this journey with us.”
