Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has unveiled ambitious plans to transform the state into a premier sports destination with the development of a world-class stadium complex in Umuahia.
The announcement came during a meeting with a delegation from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), led by its President, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, at the Government House in Umuahia.
Governor Otti revealed that the project will be executed in two phases, beginning with an immediate upgrade of the Umuahia Township Stadium to meet professional standards.
Otti said: “On the issue of the stadium, the Umuahia Township Stadium, not too long ago, I had given approval to upgrade the place and make it what a stadium should look like. In the immediate term, we are going to upgrade it and make it a standard township stadium. We’ll do the futuristic one as time goes on.”
The governor emphasised that the short-term upgrade will provide Abia Warriors Football Club and other teams with a suitable home ground while the larger project takes shape.
However, the centerpiece of his vision is the “Abia Stadium City,” a state-of-the-art sports complex designed to elevate the state’s profile in continental and global sports.
“The land has been acquired, and work is going on right now with the design,” Otti explained. “It’s not just a stadium, but it’s going to be a stadium city. It’s a complex. We’re going to have even an entertainment village at the back of the stadium city. We’ll have plazas, we’ll have a conference center, we’ll have residential apartments.”
Governor Otti described sports as a unifying force and stressed that his administration is committed to leveraging it for youth development and economic growth.
He acknowledged the NFF’s support and pledged continued collaboration to nurture sporting talent in Abia. The governor also congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the recent successes of Nigeria’s Super Falcons, vowing to ensure Abia contributes significantly to the nation’s sports achievements.
In his remarks, NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau praised Otti’s commitment to sports development, describing Abia as “the home of football in Nigeria.” He recalled the state’s historic achievements in continental competitions and commended the progress of Abia Warriors under Otti’s leadership
Gusau assured the governor of the NFF’s technical support in upgrading the Umuahia Township Stadium, urging swift action to restore the facility to its former glory.
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, and Abia Warriors Chairman, Mr. John Obuh, were among the stakeholders present at the meeting.
With the township stadium upgrade set to commence immediately and the Stadium City in the design phase, Abia is poised to become a hub for sports and entertainment in Nigeria.
