Manchester City are through to the 2025/26 season Emirates FA Cup final after a 2-1 comeback win over Championship’s Southampton at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.
Despite being the underdog in the semifinal tie, Southampton were able to neutralise City’s early attacking threat and surprisingly took the lead in the 79th minute when Finn Azaz curled a well-placed shot into the top right corner of the net.
However, the advantage only lasted for three minutes as Jeremy Doku equalised for City in the 82nd minute after his effort from the edge of the box was deflected into the net.
City overwhelmed Southampton’s defence immediately after the goal in search of a winner and pulled it off in the 87th minute through Nico Gonzalez, who fired home from almost 30 yards out to seal the victory for Pep Guardiola’s side.
The Cityzens will face the winner of the semifinal match between Chelsea and Leeds United in the final of the competition next month
City are still on course for a domestic treble this season after winning the Carabao Cup last month and are only three points behind Arsenal in the Premier League title race with one game in hand.
“What a game! Honestly, I have to rest a bit now. The last 15 to 20 minutes were unbelievable. We were pushing hard, and as soon as they scored, we were like, ‘Wow, OK. We have to score!’ We scored a first, then a second – a third final in three years for me, I’m so happy. Glory to Jesus, honestly. I’m grateful to be able to play in stadiums like this,” Doku said after the game.
He added, “It’s a good team (Southampton), honestly. I’m not surprised they are 19 games unbeaten. I’m not surprised that they’re going to be promoted to the Premier League. They played a very good game!”
