The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers found culpable in the fatal shooting incident that occurred on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Delta State, which claimed the life of Mr. Mene Ogidi.
The development followed an earlier directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who immediately ordered the withdrawal of all officers linked to the incident from the Delta State Command.
The officers were subsequently transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja for accelerated disciplinary proceedings.
According to the Force, the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), working alongside other internal disciplinary channels, has now concluded its investigation into the incident.
Findings from the panel reportedly established that the principal officer involved, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other existing regulations guiding the use of firearms by police personnel.
The committee described his conduct as unlawful, unprofessional, and a betrayal of the oath sworn by officers to protect lives and uphold the law.
As a result, the FDC recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers found culpable in the matter.
The recommendations have since been approved by the Inspector-General of Police and forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
The Police further disclosed that upon the completion of administrative formalities, the affected officers would be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in what has been described as an extrajudicial shooting.
Reaffirming the Force’s position, the Inspector-General stated that the Nigeria Police Force maintains zero tolerance for extra-judicial actions, abuse of power, and unlawful use of firearms by any officer.
He stressed that no police uniform gives any officer the right to unlawfully take life outside the provisions of the law, warning that officers who violate this principle would face the full weight of disciplinary and legal sanctions.
The police chief also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, Mr. Mene Ogidi, acknowledging the pain caused by the tragedy.
He assured the family that the matter would not be handled lightly and that justice would be pursued in a manner that restores public confidence and reinforces institutional accountability.
The Force appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, while assuring citizens of its continued commitment to professionalism, discipline, accountability, and the protection of the rights and dignity of all Nigerians.
