A former Governor of Kano State and the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has officially resigned from the party, citing the need for political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso announced his resignation in a personally signed statement released on Sunday, describing the decision as difficult despite his long-standing commitment to the platform he helped build.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” the statement read.
“As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make. However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation.”
The former governor expressed gratitude to the party’s National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, the National Working Committee, the Board of Trustees, and his loyal supporters within the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
“I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout my time. We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.
Although Kwankwaso did not immediately name his next political destination, it has been reported that credible sources within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the NNPP confirmed he is expected to formally join the ADC on Monday in Kano.
He is likely to be received by the ADC National Chairman, David Mark, and the party’s National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. The move comes just days after Kwankwaso held a closed-door meeting with former Vice President and ADC stalwart Atiku Abubakar in Abuja.
Speculation is also rife that the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo, may follow Kwankwaso to the ADC.
