A fresh crisis is rocking the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State as a factional chairman, Senator Jibrin Doguwa, has outrightly rejected the expulsion of federal lawmaker Abdulmumin Jibrin.
The move comes just hours after a rival faction, loyal to former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and led by Hashim Dungurawa, announced Jibrin’s removal from the party. Dungurawa’s faction had accused the legislator of anti-party activities and a failure to pay mandatory dues.
However, Senator Doguwa dismissed the expulsion as an illegal act carried out without legitimacy. Insisting he is the party’s legitimate chairman in the state, Doguwa declared the decision null and void, stating it was made without his faction’s consent.
Doguwa also came to the defense of Jibrin’s recent controversial television interview, arguing that the lawmaker’s actions were not against the party’s interests. He stated that every politician holds the right to change platforms, citing President Bola Tinubu’s own political history.
Accusing Dungurawa of overreaching his authority, Doguwa issued a stern warning of imminent legal action if the expulsions of party stalwarts continue.
This development underscores the deepening fractures within the NNPP, which has been embroiled in persistent leadership tussles since the 2023 general elections. Jibrin, a former APC chieftain who defected to the NNPP in 2022, has recently hinted at another potential defection, fueling speculation about his next political move.
