The Independent National Electoral Commission has officially recognised Major Agbo as the National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party, bringing an end to the protracted leadership crisis that has plagued the opposition party since the 2023 general election.
In a significant development announced at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, the electoral commission formally updated its portal to reflect Agbo’s leadership, replacing factional chairman Bala Yusuf.
The commission also recorded the names of other National Working Committee members, including National Secretary Olaposi Oginni, National Treasurer Prince Adetoyese Omokanye, National Financial Secretary Anthony Apugo, and National Legal Adviser Asuquo Ibok.
Addressing journalists shortly after the confirmation, Agbo described the development as a validation of his leadership and a turning point for the party.
“I am pleased to formally announce that the complete upload of the duly recognised National Working Committee under my leadership has been concluded by INEC,” he stated.
“This development reinforces the legitimacy of the leadership of our great party and strengthens our preparations for future political activities. Indeed, the era of betrayal of trust is over as Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima have since gone their ways. We wish them all the best in their future political endeavours.”
Agbo expressed gratitude to the judiciary for what he described as upholding the rule of law and defending democracy.
“We were sure that the judiciary would do justice to the issues and we are indeed not disappointed. They proved to be truly the last hope of the common man, rose to the occasion, defended our democracy and rule of law in the face of avoidable threats,” he said.
With INEC’s recognition now secured, Agbo disclosed that the party has commenced preparations for the 2027 general elections, including uploading candidates in accordance with the commission’s timetable after receiving the access code.
“We are determined to present competent, credible and people-oriented candidates who will champion good governance and national development in line with our manifesto. The NNPP remains open to every patriotic Nigerian who desires positive change,” he added.
The NNPP chairman also called for stronger collaboration with the Federal Government to address the country’s security challenges and urged INEC to remain impartial ahead of the next general election.
“We must join hands with the Federal Government to tackle the challenge of insecurity in Nigeria. However, we call on the FG and all security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve inter-agency collaboration and deploy every lawful means necessary to restore peace and protect the lives of Nigerians.”
“The NNPP also urges the INEC to remain steadfast, impartial and committed to conducting free, fair, credible and transparent elections come 2027. The confidence of Nigerians in the democratic process depends largely on the integrity, independence and professionalism of the electoral umpire.”
When contacted for reaction, the ousted factional chairman, Bala Yusuf, confirmed awareness of the development but declined to comment extensively.
“Yes, I am aware. However, I don’t have enough time to discuss the details. Right now, I am in transit. When I come to Abuja, I will release a statement,” he said.
The leadership tussle has been a recurring challenge for the NNPP since the 2023 elections, with rival factions laying claim to the party’s structure. Wednesday’s development effectively settles the dispute in Agbo’s favour, paving the way for the party to focus on the 2027 electoral cycle with a unified leadership.
