The National Democratic Congress in Kano State is facing another potential setback ahead of the 2027 general elections as key members linked to its Kano Central senatorial candidate, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, have begun consultations over a possible return to the All Progressives Congress.
The development follows a solidarity visit by Gawuna’s political team to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf and his deputy, Murtala Garo, during which discussions were held that have since fueled speculation about a planned defection.
Gawuna, a former deputy governor under Abdullahi Ganduje, contested the 2023 governorship election on the APC platform but lost to Yusuf, who ran under the New Nigeria Peoples Party. He later moved to the NDC and emerged as the party’s senatorial candidate for Kano Central. However, members of his political structure are now reconsidering their alignment.
The delegation that visited Governor Yusuf was led by Muhammad Umar, a close associate of Gawuna, and included the NDC Vice Chairman in Kano State, Ali Yako, Mansur Gawuna, and Uba Mijinyawa, popularly known as Uba Danzainab.
Umar said the engagement was driven by their passion for the development and progress of Kano State, adding that their interest lies in anything that will move Kano forward and improve the lives of its people.
Yako also praised the Yusuf administration, stating that its efforts towards transforming the state are visible and that the people of Kano are aware of what the government is doing.
The possible move comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections, with alliances and defections expected to reshape political structures across the country. For the APC, the development could strengthen its grassroots network in Kano, while the NDC risks losing members linked to one of its prominent political figures in the state.
Although Gawuna’s supporters are yet to officially announce their defection, the consultations and meetings with APC-aligned leaders have continued to fuel speculations over their next political move.
