Benin City, October 15, 2025 – In a landmark move for Nigeria’s education sector, the Edo State Government has officially absorbed over 5,000 contract teachers into the state’s civil service as permanent and pensionable staff.
The historic regularisation ceremony, which was held at the Government House in Benin City on Wednesday, was marked by jubilation and applause as the teachers, many of whom had served for years on insecure contracts, finally received their permanent appointment letters directly from Governor Monday Okpebholo.
The Governor personally oversaw the distribution, a gesture underscoring his administration’s commitment to the welfare of educators. During his address, he emphasized the vital role teachers play in shaping the future of the state.
“Teachers, I am happy to see you here today,” Governor Okpebholo stated. “I wanted it this way, because I had asked several times if you had received your letters and the answer was no. So, I decided to supervise the process myself. As you collect your appointment letters today, you will also receive transport fare because I know many of you have travelled long distances.”
In a powerful declaration that resonated deeply with the audience, the Governor added, “You are very important to us. Your reward is no longer in heaven; it is here, under our watch.”
The teachers, who were previously on a monthly stipend of ₦65,000 during the previous administration, have now been transitioned to the full salary structure and benefits afforded to permanent civil servants in the state.
Earlier in the proceedings, the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, expressed his profound appreciation for the teachers’ perseverance. He hailed Governor Okpebholo as a leader genuinely concerned with their welfare.
“You have been suffering for years, yet you have stayed committed to educating our children, waking up at night to prepare lesson notes,” Dr. Iyamu said. “Beautiful schools without teachers are useless. Today, an angel has come, a leader who thinks about your welfare day and night.”
The Commissioner also used the opportunity to highlight other achievements of the administration in the education sector, including the construction of over 68 schools within one year and a significant increase in the subvention for Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.
The event was attended by top government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor Esq., and the Head of Service, Anthony Okugbonwa Esq., signalling a unified government commitment to this transformative policy.
