Jake Reiner, the eldest son of famed Hollywood director Rob Reiner, has revealed the shocking and devastating moment he learned that his brother, Nick Reiner, was allegedly responsible for the brutal murders of their parents.
The 34-year-old actor and former TV presenter described the overwhelming grief he felt when he was informed that both of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, were stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home in December 2025.
In a lengthy Substack post published on Friday, Jake shared the emotional toll of losing both of his parents in such a violent and tragic manner, and the additional shock of his brother being involved. “My world, as I knew it, had collapsed,” Jake wrote. “Nothing compares to losing both of them at the same time and, on top of that, having your brother be at the center of it. It’s almost too impossible to process.”
The deaths of Rob, 78, a legendary filmmaker known for This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, and Stand By Me, and Michele, 70, an actress, photographer, and producer, left the Hollywood community in shock.
The couple was found dead in their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025, by their daughter Romy.
According to the Los Angeles County medical examiner, the cause of death was multiple sharp force injuries.
Nick Reiner, 32, the youngest of the Reiner siblings, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder.
Prosecutors allege that following a confrontation at a party the previous night, Nick fatally stabbed his parents in their bedroom before fleeing the scene. He is set to appear in court on April 29, 2026.
Jake’s heartfelt post reflects the excruciating pain and confusion he felt after the tragedy. “We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable,” he wrote. “I understand that people have questions about what happened. Some of those answers will come in time. But some parts of this belong only to our family, and keeping them private is the only way to protect what little remains of something that was taken from us.”
Jake also expressed deep sorrow over the final moments of his parents, imagining the fear they must have experienced. “They were the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them,” he wrote. “They deserved to be loved, respected, and appreciated for everything they gave to all three of us and to the world.”
In the 1,625-word essay, Jake emphasized that his sister, Romy, would share her perspective in her own time. “My goal in writing this is to offer some insight into not only what I lost but also to celebrate what my parents meant to me,” Jake said.
Every day since the deaths has been a struggle for Jake, who described how the murders have affected every aspect of his life. “Every meeting we take, every person we talk to, every tear we shed, every movement we make is connected to our parents being murdered,” he said. “In the middle of trying to process the most devastating moment of your life, the world demands meetings, paperwork, decisions, and explanations; as if documentation must come before mourning.”
