The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said that the politicians who once criticised him are now the ones defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja at the flag-off of a road construction project, Wike pointed out the irony of his former critics now joining the very party they accused him of supporting.
“They Criticised Me, Now They Praise My Path”
Wike recalled how these individuals, including state governors, had accused him of destabilising the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and of secretly working for the APC.
“I have been watching on daily television and social media, people who said I want to destabilise the party, that I am working for the APC. All of them are now in the APC,” Wike stated.
He added, “So, if it is true [that I was working for the APC], they should commend me for working for where they are heading. I should be commended for doing a good job for them.”
Defections Justify My Support for Tinubu, Says Minister
The Minister’s comments come amidst a wave of high-profile defections from the PDP to the APC. In the past two days, the Governors of Enugu and Bayelsa States, along with 19 state assembly members, have resigned from the PDP to join the ruling party.
Wike argued that these moves justify his own decision to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 election. He praised President Tinubu’s “decisive leadership,” crediting him with improving the finances of state governments.
“Today, by the leadership of somebody, every state now has money. Not only to pay salaries but also to embark on projects. It was not like that before,” Wike said.
He concluded that supporting the President was “worthwhile,” as his policies have ensured that “no governor will talk about leaving debts for his successor, unlike what used to happen before.”
