Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced a strategic plan to decentralise power generation and distribution across the state.
The move, according to the Governor, is aimed at freeing residents and businesses from the unreliable services of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).
The Governor disclosed this while speaking at the 52nd Annual Convention of the Uromi Community Association of Nigeria (UCAN), held at the Uromi City Hall in Esan North-East Local Government Area.
Governor Okpebholo acknowledged that erratic power supply from BEDC has become a major challenge for Edo people, negatively affecting businesses across the state. To address this, his administration is putting modalities in place to improve efficiency and create alternative power sources.
“We flagged off 100MW of power in Benin City, and we will also have 100MW here too,” the Governor told the gathering. “The inauguration of 100MW of power in Edo Central will enable us to decentralize the power sector and ensure our people in Afemai and Edo Central enjoy electricity.”
The Governor’s plan follows a recent groundbreaking ceremony for a 100MW Power Generating Plant and a 300 Metric Tons Per Day LNG Facility at the Taihu Industrial Park in Ologbo, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area (Edo South). He confirmed that a similar project is now being planned for Edo Central Senatorial District.
Beyond energy, Governor Okpebholo assured the people of even development across the three senatorial districts, stating, “I am in office to work for Edo people. I will touch every area with developmental projects that will benefit and improve the lives of my people.”
The Governor also used the platform to criticize the immediate past administration of Godwin Obaseki, accusing it of rushing to commission uncompleted projects on the eve of leaving office. He specifically cited the Stella Obasanjo Hospital, claiming it was falsely presented as completed, forcing the current administration to spend significant funds to finish the work.
Earlier, the Ojuoromi of Uromi, HRH Anselm Edenojie II, drew the Governor’s attention to the abandoned Ahojie Township Stadium project. The traditional ruler noted that a functional stadium in Uromi would promote youth engagement in sports, foster talent development, and spur economic activity.
On the political front, Governor Okpebholo expressed optimism about securing 2.5 million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
He disclosed that he has advised the President not to campaign in Edo but to only visit for project commissioning. The Governor thanked the traditional ruler for supporting this target.
