The U.S. Mission Nigeria today offered its profound condolences to the family, community, and loved ones of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, who passed away on January 15.
Imam Abdullahi was a fearless and revered advocate for religious tolerance, whose lifelong dedication to interfaith outreach bridged communities. His extraordinary courage was formally recognised by the U.S. Department of State, which honoured him with the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award.
A statement by the Mission on its Facebook account on Tuesday, said “his award commemorated his heroic actions in June 2018 in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State, where, at great personal risk, he saved the lives of hundreds of fellow Nigerians—primarily Christians—who were under attack.
His selfless intervention stood as a powerful testament to his deep humanity and unwavering commitment to peace.
“Imam Abdullahi’s legacy is one of extraordinary bravery and profound compassion,” said a U.S. Mission. “His actions were a definitive demonstration that our common humanity far outweighs our differences. He embodied the very principles of interfaith coexistence and harmony, and his life’s work will continue to inspire Nigerians and Americans alike to build a more peaceful and accepting world.”
The U.S. Mission joins all Nigerians in mourning this immense loss while celebrating an enduring legacy of peace that will continue to inspire future generations.
