Former Kano State Governor and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, is set to meet with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
This high-stakes meeting comes on the heels of a meeting of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf of the NNPP and President Tinubu on Monday to finalise his own defection plans to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
A report by Daily Nigeria disclosed that Governor Yusuf’s meeting, which lasted approximately one hour, was a strategic move to secure his political transition and to make a final appeal to bring his political mentor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, into the APC fold.
The Monday meeting included prominent figures such as the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio; the National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje; and the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, underscoring the importance of the discussions.
Spear News reports that President Tinubu and the NNPP leader met last year in two separate meetings, which were reported as part of negotiations to join the APC ahead of 2027
President Tinubu’s subsequent invitation to Kwankwaso signals a direct attempt to broker a major political realignment. If successful, the defection of the NNPP’s top figures would significantly alter the political landscape in the crucial Northwest region and nationally.
The upcoming meeting between the President and the NNPP leader is now being closely watched by political observers, as its outcome could mark one of the most consequential shifts in the nation’s political calculus since the 2023 general elections.
