President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the first set of diplomatic postings from the list of 68 ambassador-designates confirmed by the Senate last year, appointing envoys to four critical allied nations.
In a directive issued to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, the President confirmed the postings of Ambassador Ayodele Oke as the ambassador-designate to the French Republic and Colonel Lateef Are as the ambassador-designate to the United States of America.
The President also approved the posting of Ambassador Amin Dalhatu, the immediate past ambassador to South Korea, as the high commissioner-designate to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Furthermore, Usman Isa Dakingari Suleiman, a former Governor of Kebbi State, was named the ambassador-designate to the Republic of Turkey.
A notable strategic posting, Colonel Lateef Are’s appointment to the United States places a seasoned military and diplomatic figure at the helm of Nigeria’s most crucial bilateral mission. Ambassador Ayodele Oke, a career diplomat, will take charge in Paris, overseeing relations with another key European partner.
The posting of Ambassador Amin Dalhatu to London marks a reassignment to another major capital, leveraging his recent experience in Seoul. The appointment of former Governor Isa Suleiman to Ankara comes as President Tinubu prepares for an official state visit to Turkey scheduled to begin next week.
In the presidential memorandum, President Tinubu instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promptly initiate diplomatic notifications to the governments of the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and Turkey, in accordance with established international protocols for agrément.
The remaining postings for the other 64 confirmed ambassador-designates are expected to be announced by the Presidency in the coming weeks.
