Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde has firmly dismissed widespread speculation about his possible defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring he remains “comfortable” in the opposition camp.
Makinde made the declaration on Thursday while speaking with journalists at the State House, Abuja, following a visit to President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
In a video aired by the NTA, the governor responded emphatically to questions about his political future, stating, “No, no, no. I’m comfortable in the PDP.”
He further elaborated on the need for a collaborative approach to national issues, saying, “We may have issues in this country where you need a bipartisan approach… where we will have to look at what is the best foot forward, in the interest of our nation. So when you get to that junction, you need everybody on board.”
His visit and statements come against a backdrop of intense political realignment and consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
President Tinubu also held a separate meeting on the same day with the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, who recently defected from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Makinde remains a significant figure in the PDP, being one of its few remaining governors following a wave of defections to the APC. He is also widely perceived to be positioning himself for the party’s presidential ticket in 2027.
The meeting with the President and his subsequent remarks are seen as a strategic move to clarify his stance and reassure his political base amidst the shifting dynamics within the country’s opposition landscape.
