The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that it has not yet reached a decision on the leadership disputes within the Peopleโs Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP).
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the clarification on Thursday evening in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi.
The announcement followed media reports and claims by factional groups that the Commission had officially recognised some persons LPโs national chairman and PDPโs national secretary.
However, Oyekanmi dismissed these claims, describing them as false and misleading
โOur attention has been drawn to some media reports claiming that the Commission has recognised certain persons as the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Labour Party (LP).โ
โThe reports also inferred that the Commission has restored a particular individual as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), referring to the listings on the Commissionโs official website.
โHowever, the reports are false and misleading. The commission has not made any decision in respect of either the LP or PDP,โ Oyekanmi said.
He explained that the Labour Partyโs list of national officers had been uploaded to INECโs website earlier, in compliance with a court orderโ and stressed that this action was in no way connected to the recent Supreme Court ruling.
โIn the same manner, the name of the National Secretary of the PDP on the same website was neither deleted nor reinstated.
โAs a law abiding institution, the commission is carefully studying the judgement of the Supreme Court on the LP and will communicate its decision to the public in due course”, he said.
