Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away today in London at the age of 82, following a month-long hospitalization.
The news was confirmed by his longtime aide Garba Shehu in an official statement.
President Buhari’s remarkable life spanned decades of dedicated service to Nigeria, first as a military officer and later as a democratically elected leader. He first served the nation as Head of State from 1983 to 1985, during which time he implemented policies aimed at restoring discipline and order in national life. His administration during this period focused on anti-corruption measures and economic reforms.
After Nigeria’s return to democratic rule, Buhari demonstrated his commitment to constitutional governance by contesting and winning the presidential election in 2015.
President Buhari was known for his personal integrity and simple lifestyle, qualities that earned him respect both at home and abroad. His leadership style emphasized fiscal responsibility and anti-corruption measures. During his presidency, Nigeria participated actively in regional and international affairs, maintaining its position as an important voice in Africa.
The former president had faced health challenges in recent years, requiring medical attention in London on several occasions. Despite these difficulties, he remained committed to his duties until the completion of his second term in 2023.
