Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has secured the Accord Party’s governorship ticket for the 2026 election, just a day after formally announcing his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party.
Adeleke emerged as the sole candidate in a primary held in Osogbo on Wednesday, polling 145 votes out of 150 cast by delegates from across the state. Five votes were declared invalid.
The Governor was joined at the event by his deputy, Kola Adewusi, and several political appointees, but no members of the Osun State House of Assembly or National Assembly elected on the PDP platform were in attendance.
The state’s PDP Chairman, Sunday Bisi, and the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Wale Egbedun, were also absent.
Security was heavy at the venue, with armed police and operatives of the Department of State Services deployed.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission observed the primary, which was attended by the national leadership of the Accord Party led by its chairman, Maxwell Mgbudem.
Announcing the result, the Secretary of the Electoral Committee, Abdulazeez Salaudeen, declared Adeleke the winner and the party’s flagbearer for the August 2026 governorship election.
Adeleke had announced his move to the Accord Party on Tuesday, stating he joined the platform on November 6 after weeks of consultation, and citing the party’s philosophy of welfarism as aligning with his administration’s focus.
