The Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, today participated in the party’s ward congress in her Jere South Ward, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, as the party commenced its nationwide grassroots reorganisation exercise.
The exercise was held jointly with Jere North Ward at the same venue, with party members peacefully electing new executives to manage party affairs at the grassroots level.
New Executives Elected
Speaking after observing the process, Senator Usman confirmed that the exercise proceeded smoothly.
“This marks the commencement of our congresses with the ward level. What you have seen here are Jere North and Jere South conducting their congresses together, as is customary. New executives have been duly elected,” she said.
Roadmap to National Convention
Senator Usman outlined the next phases of the exercise, stating that the party will proceed to local government and state congresses before culminating in a national convention.
Ward congresses were conducted nationwide across all 8,809 political wards in Nigeria. The elected ward executives are expected to participate in the forthcoming local government congresses scheduled for April 24, 2026, followed by state congresses on April 25, 2026, leading to the national convention on April 28, 2026 in Umuahia, Abia State.
INEC Commended
Senator Usman expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the exercise, describing it as orderly and well-coordinated. She specifically commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its prompt deployment of monitoring teams across the country.
“Reports from across the federation indicate that the exercise was largely peaceful and well-organised, with INEC playing a commendable role through timely monitoring,” she stated.
Commitment to Gender Inclusion
On inclusivity, Senator Usman reaffirmed the party’s commitment to gender balance, emphasizing the importance of increased female participation in leadership, particularly in party administration.
She urged party members to sustain the peaceful conduct observed during the ward congresses throughout the remaining stages of the process, including the national convention.
