President Bola Tinubu has extended his profound condolences to the families of those who died, as well as to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), United Capital, and United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, following a devastating fire that engulfed the Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Tuesday.
The President’s message of sympathy was conveyed in an official statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.
President Tinubu specifically directed his condolences to the management and staff of the affected corporations, particularly those who lost loved ones in the inferno. He also expressed his wishes for a full recovery to the injured, who are currently receiving medical attention.
In his statement, the President acknowledged the brave efforts of first responders. “The President commends the emergency responders, including the Federal Fire Service, first aiders, medical personnel, and members of the public, for their quick intervention and notes their deep sense of responsibility during the evacuation,” the release stated.
Looking forward, President Tinubu used the tragedy to emphasise the need for improved safety protocols, advising “more caution, training, and alertness to avert such emergencies in the future.”
The President concluded his message with a spiritual note, praying that “God Almighty will receive the souls of the departed and grant quick recovery to the injured.”
The multi-storey Afriland Towers houses major corporate offices, including the headquarters of the FIRS, making the incident a significant event with considerable national impact. Investigations into the cause of the fire are likely ongoing.
