Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas has officially handed power back to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, ending a half-year period of emergency rule in Rivers State.
Ibas was appointed by President Bola Tinubu six months ago to stabilise the state after serious political turmoil paralysed its government. Speaking at the handover, Ibas stated that law and order had been restored. He listed milestones achieved under his watch, including local elections and the passage of a state budget.
He issued a warning, saying that āpower without restraint can cripple institutionsā and that political rivalry without dialogue is a danger to democracy. He then called on all residents to support Governor Fubara now that he has returned to office.
President Tinubu formally ended the state of emergency on Wednesday, paving the way for this return to normal democratic governance.
