The Lagos State Police Command has arrested additional suspects in connection with the killing of Prince Ademola Akinloye, the son of the Ajiran of Agungi, Oba Tijani Akinloye.
The victim was reportedly shot and butchered by gunmen on August 26, 2024, along Chevron Drive near Ebeano Supermarket in the Agungi area of Lagos State, an incident that sparked widespread outrage in the community.
Initial investigations by the police led to the arrest of nine suspects who were linked to the killing through intelligence gathering and other investigative efforts. According to police authorities, the suspects were also connected to the earlier killing of one Sheriff Salami, which occurred on April 18, 2023, in the Moba community in the Ajah area of the state.
Providing an update on the investigation, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, disclosed during a meeting with journalists at the Officers’ Mess in Ikeja on Thursday that more suspects had been apprehended in connection with the crime.
Although the police commissioner did not reveal the exact number of the newly arrested suspects, he confirmed that some of them had made confessional statements detailing their alleged roles in the killing of the prince.
Jimoh stated that the command remained committed to unraveling the full circumstances surrounding the incident and bringing all those involved to justice.
He added that the police were still searching for the prime suspect, Ahmad Akanbi, who had earlier been declared wanted over his alleged involvement in the murder.
According to him, the police have not relented in their pursuit of the suspect and will continue efforts to ensure he is apprehended and prosecuted.
He said the command remained determined to ensure that justice is served and that anyone found culpable in the crime would be brought before the court to face the law.
Meanwhile, the Ojomu Royal Family of Ajiran had earlier issued a public notice confirming that it was actively involved in the ongoing investigation into the killings of Prince Akinloye and Sheriff Salami.
In the notice signed by the monarch, Oba Tijani Adetunji Akinloye, and Alhaji Yekini Olawale Bakare, the royal family stated that the killings were carried out in broad daylight within the Ojomu community.
The family emphasised that the investigation was necessary to ensure that those responsible for the murders were held accountable and to guarantee the safety and security of residents within the kingdom.
According to the statement, the royal family was determined to ensure that those responsible for the crimes do not roam freely within the community and that residents can live their lives without fear.
The statement also noted that the ongoing investigation would help provide closure for the royal family while ensuring justice for the victims of the killings.
