The Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for reaffirming Senator Hope Uzodimma as its duly nominated candidate for the Imo West Senatorial District.
The Party’s reaction follows a petition by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Chukwuemeka Ibeziako, to the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Police Force over the forgery of INEC reports relating to the Party’s National Assembly primary election, particularly for the Imo West Senatorial District.
In a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Onwuasoanya FCC Jones, the Imo APC said it received the development with satisfaction.
“The petition to the security agencies is in line with our earlier demand to the Commission to take action towards bringing to account those who had tried to impugn the integrity of the Commission and endanger our democracy by attempting to upturn through illegal means the overwhelming wishes of the majority of our Party members,” the statement said.
The Party said INEC’s reaffirmation of Senator Uzodimma’s victory has laid to rest any doubts about the transparency and credibility of its nomination process.
“It is noteworthy that the Commission reaffirmed the victory of His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, CON, as the duly nominated standard bearer of our Party for Imo West Senatorial District, thereby clearing every iota of doubt about the transparency and credibility of our Party’s nomination process,” it stated.
The Imo APC called on the security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation and prosecute all those involved in the forgery, regardless of their position or influence.
“We therefore call on the security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation towards bringing anyone, no matter how highly placed, who might have participated in this criminal infarction and apparent felony, to book,” the Party said.
It urged the agencies to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves, stating that doing so would boost Nigerians’ confidence in the country’s institutions.
“We believe that the agencies concerned should treat this with every seriousness in order to strengthen the confidence of Nigerians in its readiness to protect our democracy and the integrity of our institutions,” the statement added.
