In a message marking Eid-el Maulud, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Nigerians not to lose hope and to join forces with the party to “salvage the nation.”
The statement, released on Friday, called for a period of national rebirth and reflection on the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed.
The party used the occasion to issue a strong critique of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
The PDP called on the administration to “introspect and end its affliction on the people,” specifically demanding a review of its “oppressive policies” which it blamed for the current hardship and insecurity in the country.
The statement also cautioned the government against what it termed a “quest for the introduction of totalitarianism,” urging it to respect the sovereign will of the people and listen to alternative opinions, which it described as the “hallmark of democracy.”
It expressed sadness that despite the difficulties faced by citizens, the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration had “remained insensitive.”
The PDP accused the government of condoning corruption and “mindless pillaging of our national resources by APC members and its apologists.”
The party noted it was “heartrending” that while millions struggle to celebrate due to hardship, “APC leaders are arrogantly luxuriating and displaying their extravagant lifestyle while disregarding the welfare of the citizens.”
The PDP cautioned that the government’s actions “amount to pushing a people to the wall and daring them to do their worse.”
Despite the stern criticism of the ruling party, the PDP encouraged Nigerians to “continue to show love to one another” during the festive period.
It concluded with a call for prayers on the special day and wished the Muslim faithful happy Eid-el Maulud festivities. The statement was signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba.
