The Special Security Squad, Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists, has intensified operations across Benin City, raiding criminal hideouts and arresting suspected cult leaders on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
The joint task force, established by Governor Monday Okpebholo to combat rising insecurity, comprises military personnel, police officers, NSCDC operatives, local hunters, vigilantes, and reformed cultists.
Acting on intelligence reports, the squad targeted multiple hotspots including Obe Community along Sapele Road, Iyowa Community, Evbonika Village, and Azuwa Village in Ovia North East Local Government Area. At Azuwa, security forces stormed the area and apprehended several suspects.
In Evbonika, officers raided a building believed to be a cult gathering point, interrogating the owner and searching the premises. The operation sent a strong warning to criminal elements across the state.
Further arrests were made at a hotel located along Power Line Road in Benin’s Government Reserved Area (GRA), where incriminating materials were recovered from suspects.
Governor Okpebholo warned that the crackdown would continue until criminal networks are completely dismantled. Security operatives have been directed to maintain professionalism and uphold human rights standards during operations while working closely with community stakeholders. Residents have welcomed the increased security presence, expressing hope that the sustained operations will restore lasting peace across Benin City and neighbouring communities.
