A senior member of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) has declared that Nigeria’s identity is shaped not by its current security challenges but by the extraordinary resilience of its citizens.
Maryam Shetty, a former ministerial nominee, made the assertion in a social media post on Wednesday, as the country grapples with widespread banditry, kidnapping, a persistent insurgency in some parts of the country.
“These past weeks have tested us as a nation, but they have also revealed the extraordinary resilience that lives in every Nigerian,” she wrote
Her comments follow a series of high-profile kidnappings and attacks that have intensified national anxiety and pressured President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In response, the government has ordered a security overhaul, including withdrawing police officers from protecting VIPs, and the president has postponed foreign trips to address the crisis.
Amid this climate, Shetty praised Nigerians who, “in the face of uncertainty, have stood by one another with strength, patience, and an unshakable belief in better days ahead.”
She framed the national character as one of defiance, stating, “Our spirit has never been defined by challenges, but by the courage with which we confront them,” and identified hope as the country’s “greatest asset.”
Looking forward, she urged unity, asking citizens to “draw strength from prayers and continued belief in our nation, in our collective strength, and in the brighter future we are building together.”
She concluded with a message of faith, writing, “We will rise through this, stronger, wiser, and more united in sha Allah!”
