The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned Nigerians against falling victims to fake messages and online communications claiming to come from the apex bank.
In a statement signed by the Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Mrs. Hakama Sidi-Ali, Tuesday night, she said, ” CBN had observed an increase in fraudulent emails, text messages, and online posts designed to mislead people and gain access to their personal information.
Sidi-Ali said the fake communications often contain links that prompt unsuspecting recipients to click, with the aim of hacking into their personal accounts. According to the Bank, the messages also spread false claims about its leadership, licensing activities, and policy decisions.
“These fraudulent messages, which prompt recipients to click links, peddle false information about the Bank’s leadership, licensing, and policy issues, and are intended to hack personal accounts”.
The apex bank, however, advised Nigerians to be vigilant and avoid interacting with suspicious links or websites. It stressed that individuals should not share personal or financial details on platforms that appear questionable or unverified, confirm any information about its activities through its official website or trusted media channels, insisting that that remains the safest way to verify genuine communications.
Also, CBN called on Nigerians to report any suspected fraudulent messages, emails, or websites to law enforcements agencies.
