In an announcement from the State House on Monday, Fegho John Umunubo, the Special Assistant to the President on Digital and Creative Economy, has been disengaged from his duties with immediate effect.
The statement, signed by Abiodun Oladunjoye, Director of Information & Public Relations, did not provide a reason for Umunubo’s dismissal. However, it contained an unusual and severe warning to the public and stakeholders, explicitly stating that the former aide no longer represents the Tinubu administration “in any capacity.”
The notice went a step further, cautioning that anyone who continues to interface with Umunubo under the pretense of him representing the government does so at their own peril.
“Henceforth, anyone who interfaces with him in the name of President Tinubu’s administration does so at his or her own risk,” the statement read. “We urge all stakeholders and constituents of the digital and creative economy to be so guided.”
Mr. Umunubo, who served in the Office of the Vice President, was a key figure in the administration’s efforts to engage Nigeria’s burgeoning tech and creative sectors. His disengagement creates an immediate vacancy in a critical policy area that the government has identified as a major pillar for economic growth and job creation.
The specific circumstances leading to his dismissal remain unclear. The terse and forceful language of the announcement suggests a decisive break, but officials have yet to comment beyond the published statement.
The warning to the public implies the administration is seeking to preempt any potential misrepresentation and immediately distance itself from the former aide’s future actions..
