President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday received former President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, following Jonathan’s return to Nigeria from Guinea-Bissau, where he had been on an election monitoring mission.
Jonathan, who has been actively involved in regional peace and democratic processes across West Africa, travelled to Guinea-Bissau earlier in the week as part of efforts to support credible electoral conduct in the country. His visit coincided with rising political tension, culminating in a sudden military takeover that triggered widespread concern about his safety and that of other election observers.
Sources around the diplomatic community had expressed anxiety as communication from parts of Guinea-Bissau became strained amid the unfolding security situation. Jonathan’s safe return was therefore met with relief among government officials, international partners, and supporters.
At the Villa, President Tinubu welcomed the former Nigerian leader and received a briefing on the situation in Guinea-Bissau and ongoing efforts by West African leaders to restore stability. Jonathan’s visit to the President underscores Nigeria’s continued leadership role in regional peacekeeping, conflict resolution, and the defence of democratic governance within ECOWAS.
