President Bola Tinubu has lauded the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, for displaying the “resilience of the Nigerian spirit” in securing the bronze medal at the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In a statement released by the State House on Saturday, the President congratulated the team for their victory over seven-time champions Egypt in the third-place match in Rabat, Morocco.
The win came via a penalty shootout after Nigeria dominated regular time.
The President’s commendation focused on the team’s ability to recover from the heartbreak of a semi-final defeat to hosts Morocco just days earlier.
“Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed,” President Tinubu stated.
“However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off.”
He highlighted that the players’ determination, persistence, and can-do attitude reflected the character of the nation. The President expressed the nation’s pride as the team prepared to receive their medals.
“We will all be proud of them as they receive their hard-earned bronze medal on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco,” he said.
Concluding with a direct tribute, the President said, “Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players. This bronze medal surely feels good like gold.”
