Peter Ameh, the national secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), has claimed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is singularly concerned about the political threat posed by Labour Party’s Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 elections, and not by other potential contenders like Atiku Abubakar or Rotimi Amaechi.
Ameh made the assertion during an interview on The Mic On Podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, stating that his position is based on internal data collection and behind-the-scenes engagements which reveal that the ruling party views Obi as its primary electoral obstacle.
According to him, the government is making “deliberate efforts” to prevent Peter Obi from appearing on the ballot in 2027. He pointed to the frequent social media posts by Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga targeting Obi as evidence of this preoccupation.
“Go and count how many times Bayo Onanuga has posted about Peter Obi on his Twitter page. He’s worried about Peter Obi. They’re worried,” Ameh stated.
He further contrasted the perceived threat, saying, “Tinubu is not afraid of Atiku and Rotimi Amaechi. It’s on record, they know it. There’s a high level of fear.”
To underscore Obi’s unique impact, Ameh referenced the 2023 presidential election, noting that it took “a Peter Obi” to garner significant votes in Lagos State—a longstanding political stronghold of President Tinubu—and to win the Federal Capital Territory against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“We got into democracy in 1999, the PDP did everything to defeat Bola Tinubu in Lagos, they couldn’t.It took Mr. Peter Obi to garner about 1 million votes that was reduced to 500,000 votes. It took a Peter Obi to come to FCT where there is seat of power to defeat the APC,” he argued.
