The Nigerian Senate presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio Tuesday, formally declared the Ondo South senatorial seat vacant.
Akpabio made the declaration at plenary, noting that the legislative action was sequel to the recent appointment of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, which effectively ended his tenure in the Senate.
The Senate president stated that the vacancy takes immediate effect, in line with constitutional provisions guiding such transitions.
He added that the Senate had no option but to formally declare the seat vacant to enable the replacement process to begin.
He also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election within the next 30 days to fill the vacant position.
In addition, he instructed the Clerk to the National Assembly to officially communicate the Senate’s resolution to INEC to ensure swift compliance.
