The Obidient Movement has debunked rumours of a conflict between Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and the party’s factional National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, describing the speculation as “baseless” and “a false narrative.”
Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, addressed the claims while responding to journalists’ questions about Obi’s recent appearance at the campaign flag-off of Labour Party’s Anambra gubernatorial candidate, George Moghalu.
“His Excellency Peter Obi has consistently affirmed that he remains a member of the Labour Party under the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman,”
“He has also clearly stated his support for all individuals who had previously secured the party’s ticket to contest political positions”, Tanko stated.
The clarification comes after speculation emerged that Obi’s attendance at Moghalu’s campaign event signalled a rift with Usman. However, Dr. Tanko dismissed the claims as opposition propaganda.
“The rumour that Peter Obi has betrayed Senator Nenadi Usman is entirely baseless,” he said. “It is a false narrative being peddled by opposition elements to distract.”
He further emphasised that Usman and other key Labour Party stakeholders were fully aware of Obi’s activities and supported his engagements.
“Senator Nenadi Usman, along with other key stakeholders in this movement, are fully aware of and support the recent development, Tanko noted.
“Let’s not forget that His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, is a man of integrity, known for keeping his word. His decision to support Dr. George Moghalu, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate for Anambra State, reflects that consistency.”
Dr. Tanko also highlighted the party’s shift from traditional political dynamics, pointing out that only elected officials and key figures within the movement had addressed recent developments.
“So far, the only individuals who have spoken on these matters are Senators, Members of the House of Representatives, State Assembly members, and I. This marks a clear departure from the old political order,” he said.
He urged the public to disregard the rumours, describing them as attempts to create unnecessary division.
“Our focus remains on one goal: building a strong movement, a united Labour Party, and a better Nigeria. That, we shall achieve,” he affirmed.
The statement concluded with the movement’s signature slogan: “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
