Ahead of the planned review of Nigeria’s constitution, stakeholders in Bauchi State have called for the creation of a new state from the existing Bauchi, which currently comprises 20 local government areas.
The demand was made during a town hall summit organised by Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South and Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence.
The event, held in collaboration with the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bauchi South Zonal Executive Committee, sought public input on the proposed amendment of the 1999 Constitution.
In addition to the creation of a new state, stakeholders urged the National Assembly to grant constitutional roles to traditional rulers and establish more local government areas in Bauchi State.
Senator Umar explained that the summit aimed to foster inclusive dialogue on critical constitutional issues, bringing together government representatives, civil society organizations, traditional rulers, legal experts, youth and women groups, trade unions, political leaders, artisans, and the general public.
Hon. Abdulmumini Mohammed Kundak, Chairman of the Zonal Executive Committee for the Constitution Review, stated that the summit’s outcomes would be presented at the upcoming Zonal Public Hearing in Maiduguri, Borno State. He assured participants that their contributions would help shape a constitution reflecting Nigeria’s diverse aspirations.
To streamline the submission process, stakeholders resolved to form a committee tasked with collecting, reviewing, and harmonizing memoranda from interested communities. This step ensures a unified position by eliminating inconsistencies, duplications, or conflicting interests among groups with similar requests.
Barrister Ibrahim Yakubu Umar, appointed as the committee’s chairman, pledged transparency, fairness, and prompt action. He emphasized thorough consultations to ensure all voices are heard and promised timely collation and submission of memoranda for the next stage of the review process.
