The Bauchi State Government has commenced the statewide distribution of assorted food items under its 2026 Ramadan palliative programme, targeting residents across the 20 local government areas.
The initiative, designed to ease economic hardship during the holy month of Ramadan, also extends support to religious bodies and vulnerable groups throughout the state.
Flagging off the exercise, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajara Yakubu Wanka, said the intervention has been consistently coordinated by the ministry over the past three years. She explained that each local government area received a trailer-load of essential food commodities, including rice, maize, millet, sorghum and sugar.
According to her, the programme was approved by Governor Bala Mohammed as part of efforts to cushion the impact of rising living costs and to support citizens during Ramadan and the forthcoming Sallah celebrations.
She stressed the importance of transparency and fairness in the distribution process, urging community leaders and religious organisations to ensure the items reach intended beneficiaries at the grassroots.
Accountability, she noted, remains central to delivering government interventions effectively.
Local government chairmen, alongside representatives of Jama’atu Nasril Islam and the Christian Association of Nigeria, commended the state government for the gesture and pledged their cooperation to guarantee a smooth and equitable distribution.
A breakdown of the items indicates that 25,535 bags of 25kg rice, 25,539 bags of maize, 11,970 bags of millet, 16,751 bags of sorghum and 5,000 bags of sugar are being distributed under the programme.
The distribution is expected to be concluded across all councils ahead of the peak Ramadan period.
