Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has commissioned 18 newly completed township roads constructed by the Bauchi State Government in Bauchi metropolis.
The projects, which span a combined 49.7 kilometres, were executed at an estimated cost of N13.7 billion as part of the state government’s efforts to improve transportation, connectivity, security and access to essential services within the state capital.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Monday, Jonathan described the projects as evidence of practical governance and impactful investment in infrastructure.
He commended Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed for what he described as visionary leadership and responsive governance, noting that well-developed road networks were essential to economic growth and community development.
According to him, roads do more than connect communities, as they facilitate commerce, create economic opportunities and promote inclusive development.
Jonathan, who described Governor Mohammed as a former strong member of his administration, urged residents of Bauchi State to continue supporting the government and protecting public infrastructure.
He said the success of any government should ultimately be measured by the positive changes it brings to the lives of citizens through effective service delivery, transparency and accountability.
In his remarks, Governor Bala Mohammed said the completion of the projects demonstrated his administration’s commitment to prudent management of public resources and the provision of infrastructure capable of stimulating economic growth.
Mohammed disclosed that his administration had set a target of constructing at least 5,000 kilometres of roads across Bauchi State, adding that about 3,000 kilometres had so far been completed since he assumed office in 2019.
He explained that the government’s road development programme was designed not only to construct roads but also to expand economic opportunities, improve livelihoods and create the foundation for sustainable development.
The governor said the newly completed township roads were constructed in line with approved engineering standards and specifications.
He added that the projects incorporated durable pavements, drainage systems, traffic signs, road markings and speed-calming measures, while some routes were equipped with solar-powered street lighting.
Mohammed appealed to residents to protect the roads and other public infrastructure, warning against activities capable of damaging the facilities.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Works and Transport, Prof. Titus Uba Ketkukah, said the commissioning demonstrated the commitment of the state government to infrastructure development.
He assured residents that the ministry would continue to monitor road projects to ensure that they were properly executed, delivered and certified in accordance with approved engineering standards.
In his vote of thanks, the Chairman of the Bauchi State Council of Traditional Rulers and Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, expressed appreciation to Jonathan for identifying with the state.
The Emir described the former president as a worthy son of Bauchi and commended Governor Mohammed for what he called significant transformation of the state since his election in 2019.
He said residents had witnessed the benefits of democratic governance under the present administration and assured that the people would continue to support efforts aimed at further developing the state.
