Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has issued a public reassurance to calm apprehensions in his constituency following reports of a recent airstrike in Sokoto State, asserting that legitimate counterterrorism operations are focused on criminal elements and not innocent civilians.
The senator, who represents Sokoto South, made the reassurance in a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, addressing growing concerns and circulating narratives about the nature of a security operation conducted in cooperation with international partners.
โIt is important to reassure the public that counterterrorism operations are targeted at criminal and terrorist elements who threaten our collective safety, and not at innocent civilians who are themselves victims of insecurity,โ Tambuwal stated.
He emphasised that the protection of civilian lives remains the paramount principle in all legitimate security activities.
The Senator acknowledged the reports of the airstrike, which is understood to be part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts involving the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States.
While details of the specific operation remain under official review, the former governor noted that he is in โactive talks with relevant security authorities to obtain full details and ensure that all necessary safeguards are upheld.โ
He urged communities in Sokoto and beyond to remain calm and law abiding as authorities work to clarify the exact circumstances.
Commending the security forces for their courage and professionalism, the governor called for public support and cooperation with troops who face โextremingly challenging conditionsโ in the fight against terrorism and banditry.
Tambuwal also appealed to community leaders, traditional institutions, and residents to continue partnering with security agencies by providing credible information and resisting misinformation that could inflame tensions.
โTogether, through unity, vigilance, and support for lawful security efforts, we will overcome the forces of terror and secure lasting peace for Sokoto State and Nigeria at large,โ he concluded.
