Former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has made a stunning allegation against his counterpart, Peter Obi.
Amaechi claimed that Obi admitted to lying about the legitimacy of his 2013 election as Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) only after being confronted in a church.
Amaechi recounted the events leading to the dramatic encounter. He revealed that despite pressure from former President Goodluck Jonathan, he ran for a second term as NGF Chairman and won. However, the victory was framed in the media as a personal defeat for Jonathan, souring their relationship.
“My friend, Peter Obi, was going about telling people I didn’t win the election,” Amaechi stated in a viral video that has ignited a fresh political drama.
“Unfortunately for the two of us, we met at Holy Trinity Church in Abuja,” Amaechi detailed. “We were kneeling down at the front of the altar… I told him, if you swear that I didn’t win election I would resign.”
According to Amaechi, Obi refused to take the oath, instead he said: “No na, it’s politics”.
The former Transportation Minister now interprets this refusal as a tacit confession. He alleges that by not swearing, Obi effectively admitted he had been spreading falsehoods about the NGF election outcome.
The viral nature of this claim has thrust an old political rivalry back into the spotlight, raising questions about the incident and potentially impacting the public perception of Obi. As of now, Peter Obi has not issued a public response to Amaechi’s allegation.
