The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert concerning the circulation of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachet milk across Nigeria.
The agency warned consumers to be vigilant and avoid purchasing this specific product.
According to the alert, Promasidor Nigeria Ltd., the legitimate manufacturer of Cowbell products, officially stopped producing the “Our Milk” variant in September 2023. It was replaced with a new product named Cowbell “Our Creamy Goodness.” The counterfeit items are imitations of the old, discontinued packaging and are not produced or authorised by Promasidor. The fakes illegally use the brand name, NAFDAC registration number, and packaging design.
Consuming the counterfeit milk poses serious health risks. The fake product may contain toxic chemicals, unapproved additives, or improperly diluted ingredients. Potential consequences include foodborne illnesses, severe allergic reactions, organ damage, and could be fatal. Infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly are considered most vulnerable to these dangers.
NAFDAC has advised healthcare professionals and the public to immediately report any suspicion of the substandard product. Sightings can be reported to the nearest NAFDAC office, by calling the toll-free number 0800-162-3322, or via email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng. The agency urges consumers to always check product labels carefully and to purchase food items only from reputable retailers.
