In a surprising political development, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (rtd), former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The controversial ex-military officer made the announcement on Wednesday, stating his desire to lead Nigeria toward “true unity, security, and economic prosperity.” Al-Mustapha, who has remained a polarizing figure in Nigerian politics, expressed confidence in his ability to address the nation’s challenges, including insecurity, unemployment, and corruption.
“I have dedicated my life to serving this nation, and I believe the time has come for me to offer leadership that will restore Nigeria’s dignity and progress,” Al-Mustapha said in a statement.
His declaration has sparked mixed reactions across the country. Supporters argue that his military background and understanding of Nigeria’s security challenges make him a strong candidate, while critics question his past associations with the Abacha regime, which was marked by human rights abuses.
