Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Vice Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has threatened to leave the party following a leadership decision to reshuffle constituency tickets in Kano State.
The move has triggered a major internal crisis barely weeks after the party unveiled its 2027 presidential ticket.
The dispute arises from the enforcement of a 60/40 power-sharing agreement between the Kwankwasiyya faction, loyal to Senator Kwankwaso, and the original NDC structure in Kano State. While the agreement allocates 60 percent of positions to the Kwankwasiyya bloc and 40 percent to the party leadership, officials stated that the initial candidate list submitted by the Kwankwasiyya group did not properly reflect this ratio, necessitating a revision.
According to a memorandum signed by the Kano State NDC Chairman, Honourable Hussaini Isah Mairiga, the party approved an amended list of candidates for several federal and state constituencies. Affected federal constituencies include Kumbotso, Nassarawa, Kano Municipal, Doguwa/Tudun Wada, Sumaila/Takai, and Gwale. Adjustments were also made to State House of Assembly tickets in Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo, and Dawakin Kudu.
In response, Senator Kwankwaso is reportedly considering withdrawing from the NDC if the original Kwankwasiyya candidates are not reinstated. Such a departure would likely collapse the fragile coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The NDC leadership has defended its decision. Party spokesperson Comrade Ibrahim Waya stated that the changes were necessary to prevent internal discord and uphold the integrity of the coalition agreement. He added that the 60-40 sharing formula had been clearly understood by all parties and that the leadership acted urgently to avoid a deeper crisis.
