Saturday sunrise fire has razed the secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in
Sokoto State shortly after workers commemorated the yearly International Workers’ Day.
The inferno, reliable sources said it broke out at about 3:00 a.m. destroying the entire building, office equipment, important documents, and other assets.
Eyewitness accounts narrated that the fire went wild before emergency responders could control it, leaving a trail of widespread chaos, damage in the secretariat by dawn.
Though the real cause of the inferno remains sketchy but observers traced it to incessant power surges from the national grid.
In his reaction, the Sokoto State NLC Chairman Comrade Abdullahi Aliyu, popularly known as “Jungle”, said the loss was “unfortunate and disheartening”.
He added, “This is a painful loss for the labour movement in Sokoto.
“The extent of destruction is enormous, and it comes at a time we were just reflecting on the significance of workers’ welfare and unity”.
However, labour leaders and concerned citizens are calling on authorities to ensure a detail probe and, reform the power sector to avert further disasters.
