Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has launched a fierce condemnation of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of abandoning Nigeria’s North-Central region to rampant insecurity and bloodshed.
In a statement on his social media handle on Tuesday, Atiku highlighted the dramatic deterioration of security in states like Kwara, Niger, Plateau, and Benue. He pointed out that “Kwara, once safe, is now a hotspot of bandit and kidnap attacks,” while Niger State has seen militants “attack military bases, murder soldiers, and even massacre worshippers in a mosque.” He lamented that “Plateau and Benue continue to bury their dead while the Federal Government looks away.”
Citing grim statistics, Atiku claimed that “by May this year, just two years of Tinubu’s rule, over 10,000 lives had been lost in Northern states, with Benue accounting for more than half.” He asserted that “since then, mass killings continue weekly, while the government pretends nothing is wrong,” labelling this a “monumental failure in the basic duty of securing lives and property.”
The former presidential candidate also turned his criticism to the role of security agencies, accusing the ruling All Progressives’ Congress (APC) of using thugs to disrupt opposition meetings while security forces fail to act.
He issued a direct reminder to the Nigeria Police, stating: “You are funded by taxpayers, not by the APC. Your duty is to remain neutral, fair, and constitutional. Anything less is betrayal of public trust.”
