The Rivers State chapter of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Friday said the people of Rivers and not an individual will decide the next governor of the state in 2027.
This reaction followed a statement credited to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, where he spoke as though the outcome of the 2027 governorship election results have solely been predetermined.
Chairman of the party, Chukwudi Dimkpa, in portHarcourt on Thursday said the electorate through democratic participation would make their choice in 2027, explaining that ADC would position itself as a credible platform with an emphasis on transparency, internal democracy, and broad-based participation.
ADC was committed to building an inclusive political movement that reflected the interests of Rivers residents, he added.
On zoning, the ADC state helmsman said the party will promote balance and inclusion in the state, particularly between riverine and upland communities.
But he underscored that the importance of combining equity with competence, noting that the party would adopt a consultative approach in selecting its candidate.
In his words, “The goal was to present a candidate with the capacity to govern effectively and secure wide acceptance across the state.
“The party would, at the appropriate time, take the necessary decisions to foster unity and strengthen democratic processes”, he affirmed.
