The Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, has dealt a significant blow to terrorist networks in Zamfara State following a series of coordinated offensive operations that led to the neutralization of two insurgents and the interception of a large cache of explosives intended for criminal elements.
Military sources confirmed that the operations, which took place on 14 August 2026, are part of the broader Operation CLEAN SWEEP IV—a sustained campaign designed to degrade terrorist capabilities and disrupt their logistics across the North-West geopolitical zone.
In the first engagement, troops of Sector 2 were conducting a clearance patrol in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area when they encountered terrorists around Garin Kaso. What ensued was a fierce firefight that resulted in the immediate neutralization of two terrorists. Following the confrontation, recovery teams retrieved two rifles, two magazines, nine rounds of ammunition, and two motorcycles from the scene.
The operation took a dramatic turn when another group of terrorists, lying in wait, attempted to spring an ambush on the advancing troops from concealed positions. However, the soldiers, displaying remarkable tactical discipline, fought through the ambush and returned overwhelming fire, inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers and forcing the survivors to abandon their position and flee into nearby bushland.
Intelligence gathered from local sources in the aftermath suggests that several of the fleeing terrorists sustained gunshot wounds, and a number of bodies were reportedly evacuated by their accomplices—indicating that the actual casualty figure may be higher than initially reported.
In a separate but equally significant development on the same day, troops conducting snap checks on vehicles intercepted a suspected courier along a major route in the state. The suspect, identified as 57-year-old Sani Umar, was found to be transporting 180 units of 20mm Super Power explosives from Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, to suspected terrorist strongholds in Jibia Local Government Area of neighbouring Katsina State.
The explosives, concealed within the vehicle, were promptly recovered, and the suspect along with the means of conveyance has been taken into custody for further interrogation. Security analysts describe the interception as a major victory in the ongoing effort to sever the supply lines that sustain terrorist operations in the region.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which falls under the Theatre Command’s CLEAN SWEEP IV initiative, has intensified in recent weeks, combining ground offensives with air surveillance to track and dismantle terrorist hideouts. The operation is also focused on preventing the Lakurawa terrorist network and other armed groups from using border areas as safe havens or transit corridors for weapons and fighters.
Military authorities have reiterated their commitment to sustaining the current momentum, vowing to deny terrorists any breathing space across the North-West. The Theatre Command further assured residents of the region that troops would continue to conduct offensive operations aimed at restoring lasting peace and security to affected communities.
