The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reported a smooth takeoff of the Osun State governorship election, with 100% Registration Area Centre (RAC) activation and 94.5% of polling units open by 8:30 a.m. today.
According to an election update obtained by Spear News Nigeria, RAC activation was successfully completed at 6:09 p.m. yesterday, setting the stage for an early commencement of voting across the state.
By 8:30 a.m. today, 3,556 of the 3,763 polling units (94.5%) had opened for accreditation and voting. The remaining 207 polling units (5.5%) experienced minor delays but were all operational by 9:00 a.m., the commission confirmed.
INEC officials described the overall RAC activation and polling unit opening processes as having been conducted in a peaceful, orderly, and timely manner.
The development aligns with INEC’s commitment to ensuring that voting commences punctually across all polling units, following extensive logistical preparations and engagement with transport unions to guarantee smooth deployment of personnel and materials.
The Osun governorship election is being contested by 15 political parties, following a court ruling that compelled INEC to include the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate on the ballot.
While the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not field a candidate due to an ongoing legal dispute over its factional leadership, the commission has maintained that the election remains on course.
With 1,906,390 eligible voters expected to cast their ballots across 30 local government areas, 332 wards, and 3,763 polling units, INEC has deployed over 15,000 ad hoc personnel to ensure the seamless conduct of the election.
