Yusuf Buhari, the son of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has officially clinched the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for a House of Representatives seat in Katsina State.
The primary election, held on Saturday, saw Yusuf Buhari defeat candidates backed by a rival political faction led by former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura. The contest had been widely anticipated as a proxy battle between two influential political families in the North-West region.
Party delegates voted overwhelmingly in favour of the former president’s son, who has until now maintained a relatively low public political profile. Announcing the results, APC electoral officials described the exercise as free, fair, and transparent, noting that no major incidents of violence or malpractice were recorded.
Supporters of Yusuf Buhari reportedly broke into celebrations at the collation centre, waving party flags and chanting solidarity songs. In his acceptance speech, the candidate thanked the delegates and pledged to prioritise constituency projects, youth empowerment, and agricultural development — key issues for voters in the Katsina constituency.
Political analysts say the victory is significant not only for Yusuf Buhari’s political career but also as an indication of the enduring influence of the former president within APC structures. Despite leaving office in 2023, Muhammadu Buhari still commands considerable loyalty among party faithful in his home state and beyond.
The outcome also suggests a consolidation of the Buhari political dynasty in Katsina, even as the party prepares for the broader general election campaign. For the APC, retaining the seat is now seen as a strong possibility, given the former president’s continued popularity in the region.
Meanwhile, opposition parties are expected to announce their candidates in the coming days, setting the stage for what could be a closely watched general election contest in the constituency.
