The Federal Government has approved the design of the Lagos Airport monorail, a project designed to connect the Ikeja Railway Station—where the Lagos Redline terminates—to the new Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal 1 currently under reconstruction.
The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this on Tuesday via his X handle, stating that he was joined by the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Aviation, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and engineering teams from both the Ministry and FAAN to appraise and approve the design.
“We appraised and approved the design of the Lagos Airport monorail that would take commuters and the flying public from the Ikeja Railway Station (where the Lagos Redline terminates) to the terminal point at the new Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal 1 that is now being reconstructed,” Keyamo wrote.
He listed the five stations/stops along the route: “Ikeja Station, Domestic Airport Station, Beesam Station, Toll Gate Station and MMI Airport Station.”
Describing the project’s significance, the Minister stated, “The monorail is an integral part of the reconstruction of the nation’s major gateway at the MMIA in Lagos.”
The project is expected to enhance connectivity between Lagos’s rail infrastructure and its foremost international airport, providing a seamless transit option for passengers and reducing road congestion around the airport corridor.
The approval marks a significant milestone in the ongoing reconstruction of MMIA Terminal 1 and the broader effort to modernize aviation infrastructure at Nigeria’s busiest gateway.
